What the seas bring back to us...

On February 26th 2010, the journalist Filomena Naves wrote a piece of news for “Diário de Notícias” which is related to the discovery of an island created by the accumulation of plastic garbage in Atlantic Ocean.
Floating plastics look like jellyfishes. Therefore, some sea animals like turtles eat these chunks of garbage which causes them to die of suffocation. On the other hand, plastics don´t fully disappear.
On February of 2012, in one of the Boa Vista island´s exit in Cape Verde, a great accumulation of garbage was detected near the shore, in where some more plastics as well as some non-biodegradable materials were found.

Marine organisms play a crucial role in almost all biogeochemical processes that sustain the biosphere, and provide a variety of products (goods) and functions (services) which are essential to humankind’s well-being.
This image shows us a global problem, for many of the residues found are not from Cape Verde.
